Why Wet Dogs Smell

By Rene Foreman of Airload Environmental ltd

Have you ever wondered why your dog has that musty "wet dog" smell Dogs, among many other animals, produce a oil called Sebum from Sebaceous Glands attached to hair fur follicles.

This oil protects the animal’s skin from the cold and dehydration, among other things. It saturates the skin and fur within hours after cleaning, Even using Shampoo designed to remove the smell they still smell when wet.

They typically do not emit a strong odour until they comes in contact with water, which activates it.

The Wet Dog Smell is more common in hunting and cold-weather breeds, and less common in other breeds.

Dog odours have many contributing factors. Another reason why dogs have this musty smell could be caused by a skin condition called atopy.

Atopy is the inflammation of the skin that causes severe itching due to seasonal or food allergies. This condition triggers an overproduction of sebum (oil on the surface of skin) by the inflamed skin. It gives the coat an oily feel and a musty, foul dog odour. In addition, bacteria that thrive in sebum also contribute to dog odours.

My Trick is to feed him oily fish (mackerel fillets) after every bath.
(The oily fish smells worse than the wet dog)

Dogs all over the world, to my certain knowledge smell like this. Countries within my area include, Britain, France, US. Carribean, Malta, Cyprus, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Morocco. Not even China escapes this problem although they have a partial cure by eating the "Chow" dogs before the smell overcomes.
