My Fan Drift Hell At A Coal Mine
By Rene Foreman
Hi this is my story about one day last year when a 21/2 ton door slammed shut on my foot. It all started when Airload Environmental Ltd won the contract to clean out Welbeck coal mine fan drift. Fan drift - A short inclined passageway cut out from the side of an up cast shaft leading to the inlet of the mine fan. Used where the up cast shaft also contains winding gear, i.e. second means of egress. The drift is built on a big concrete chamber pressurized by the big fan sucking air out of the coal mine and to enter the fan drift you have to open 3 big steel doors each one pressurized and weighing 3 ton each. Anyway that’s the fan drift explained so me and my work colleague had entered the drift on the last day [it was a 5 day job] just to check if it was all cleaned properly and it was, so we started to walk back out at that point the fan became more powerful and it was sucking my hard hat off. We made it to the doors but we could not open them after about the 20th try we slowly opened it and I was walking forward with the door on my shoulder pushing it open when wush a big gust of air and then an all mighty bang the door slammed shut with my left foot still inside. I was lucky the door had pushed my foot out of my Wellington breaking my toes and damaging my girders. The best bit was we still could not open the bloody door and I was sat on the floor with my foot throbbing for half an hour later some miners heard my work colleague banging on the door and rescued us I was taken to the hospital my foot was broken in 6 places. That was 1 year ago and my foot is still sore on cold days the best bit no compo they said it was our fault, It’s not that the miner servicing the air lock door outside had anything to do with it honest!
